‘Severance’: Starting Fires in a Phrase

The following article contains spoilers for Episode 7, 43:53–44:49, of ‘Severance.’

Of all the team-bonding moments in Severance, this scene is a remarkable stand-out. The segment not only captures the mounting resistance within the Macrodata Refinement Department, but also the reciprocal loyalty that enables their team to persevere. Due to the minimal dialogue, the scene primarily relies on its cinematographic choices and transitions to convey the catalytic changes within the team.

In its most straightforward reading, a long-awaited revelation occurs from Irving, the most skeptical member of their department. Throughout the season, his team members have grown vocal in their dissent towards Lumon. Helly has opposed the company since she awoke on their conference room table. Mark and Dylan have become disillusioned towards their restricted “Innie” lives and the ominously secretive nature of the work. Yet, Irving remained a staunch adherent of Lumon, treating both the doctrine of Kier and the company legacy with reverence.
